Standards and Guidelines

Here are the main UK 'standards' and important guidance documents that relate to BIM

Product Data Definition

This Product Data Definition is intended to provide a consistent methodology for the definition, creation, management and sharing of product information through the life cycle of an asset based on the purpose of that information, and who the information is to be used by. It does not constitute a standard that has been developed through a recognised and independent consensus-building process and therefore not regarded as a formal British Standard or a BSI PAS. BS1192: 2007+ A2: 2016

BS 1192:2007 - Collaborative production of architectural, engineering and construction information – Code of practice To make the most of the collaborative working process, a common methodology for managing the data produced by and between all parties must be used. This should include the naming of data as well as a process for exchanging data.A free download from BSI Read more ...

PAS 1192-2:2013

PAS 1192-2:2013 - Specification for information management for the capital/delivery phase of construction projects using building information modelling. This document provides information on the management of data produced within a BIM project environment, and supplements the processes and procedures contained in BS 1192:2007. As of summer 2014 work has started to adopt PAS 1192-2 as an ISO standard Read more ... Free download from BSI

PAS 1192-3:2014

PAS 1192-3- Specification for information management for the operational phase of assets using building information modelling This is a partner doc to PAS 1192-2 focusing on the operational phase of assets for both new and old buildings and like PAS 1192-2, it applies to both building and infrastructure assets. BS 1192-4:2014

BS1192 part 4:2014 - Fulfilling employers information exchange requirements using COBie – Code of practice is available as a free download.

PAS 1192-5:2015

PAS 1192-5 - Specification for security-minded building information management, digital built environments and smart asset management. This PAS is available free from BSI and outlines security threats to the use of information during asset conception, procurement, design, construction, operation, and disposal. It addresses the steps required to create and cultivate an appropriate security mindset and the security culture necessary to enable business to unlock new and more efficient processes and collaborative ways of working.

A useful introduction is given in the BIM Task Group July 2015 Newsletter (page 22)

The PAS has been developed to integrate a security-minded approach into the construction lifecycle processes as specified in PAS 1192-2 and the asset management processes described in PAS 1192-3.

BS ISO 16757-1:2015

BS ISO 16757-1 sets out a framework for electronic product catalogues to transfer building services product data automatically into software models. This standard does not include detailed specifications of what data should be included for particular items (eg fan-coils, pumps, tanks.)
