The “Construction Operations Building Information Exchange” is a common data format for the publication of information. It is focused on delivering building information in a structured format, not on geometric modeling.

COBie helps capture and record important project data at the point of origin, including equipment lists, product data sheets, warranties, spare parts lists, and preventive maintenance schedules. [Source: ]

It is important to recognise that COBie should not be an extra to traditional deliverables. The information it is asking for is the same information that is normally delivered on a project, just in a standard format for all UK public sector projects. This is to enable projects to be easily compared on a level playing field. For example, a client may want to know typical life expectancy of a condensing gas boiler on a secondary school. Currently, there is no quick way to find this data, and compare between projects. By giving this data the same name across the board, anyone will know where to look for this value.

Although the basic deliverable is in Excel spreadsheet format, the data may be hosted within any software and is often exported from other software tools for expediency.
