Building Information Model

(See also Building Information Modelling)

As with many of the BIM terms there is no definitive definition of Building Information Model since its use will depend on the context.

Bill East, a US activist for moving BIM into practice, provides a useful example of files that would constitute part of the 'Model' on the buildingsmartalliance website. Some early vendor specific 'solutions' may have inferred that they provided the model but, practically, the model will be a collection of different components that drawer on, (and in many cases feed into), the shared data set that drives the BIM process.

The term federated model is used to indicate that it is collection of component software tools and 'stakeholders' that join together to produce the model.

This Autodesk page provides an example of the typical stakeholders.
