BIM and the Plan of work

BIM is being integrated into the work process by UK Government's plans of work.

The UK Government’s Digital Plan of Work (dPoW) and related Guidance can be accessed by registering at Bim Task Group's Labs Area. It is a framework for a raft of other works-in-progress in the ‘labs portal’. The RIBA BIM Overlay to the RIBA Outline Plan of Work set the scene (and provides useful context) for the 2013 revision to the RIBA Plan of Work that organises the process of managing and designing building projects and administering building contracts into a 8 Key Work Stages.

BSRIA’s Design Framework for Building Services BG 6/2014, provides close descriptors of the roles of building services players in a BIM environment that links with the Digital Plan of Work.

Project Protocols & BIM Model Integration

The CIC BIM Protocol is a supplementary legal agreement for incorporation into professional appointments and construction contracts. It is for use on common construction contracts involving Level 2 BIM to sit above ‘bespoke’ project protocols providing contextual details.

CIC also offers an Outline Scope of Services for Information Management

BIM Processes 360° Review

BIM is now extensively used in the design, construction and operation of buildings including many different building types in both the public and private sectors. Whereas great advances have been made in the technology and systems, the legal and contractual issues need to catch up (as at time of writing, February 2016). The legal and contractual issues may vary depending on the client brief and procurement process and there are many variations and hybrid methods. The following issues are considered in the 360° review document:-

  1. Definitions: 3D, Revit, BIM Level 1, 2 and 3
  2. Fees
  3. PI Insurance
  4. Split responsibility – Consultant/Contractor
  5. Consultant’s Appointment
  6. Building Contract
  7. Who owns the model
  8. Procurement – optimise and options
  9. FM & CAFM
  10. Industry engagement
  11. Readiness
  12. Process/workflow
  13. CDM
  14. Pre-qualification questions PAS 91:2013
  15. BIM Execution Plan
  16. Risk
  17. Security

These are covered more fully in the 360° review document [Feb 2016]
